Uh, this was a pretty amazing game if you didn’t watch it. 2 strikes, 1 out. Squeeze in the 12th to win the game. Cubs came back from a 6-0 deficit. It’s an understatement to say they are due…..
If you want to become a champion, it’s the little things that matter. A bunt. What a simple skill. You just have to put your bat on a ball and have it go a few feet. But, the bunt is oh so hard to execute well.
For those that don’t know the rules of American baseball here is the other element of risk in this play. The batter, a pitcher who is not known for being a good hitter had two strikes on him. If he fouls off the next pitch bunting, he is automatically out. That would have given the Cubs two outs, and only a hit would have brung in the winning run.
Going further for people that don’t know the rules of baseball. A suicide squeeze play is when the runner on third base takes off for home as the pitcher is delivering the ball to the plate. If the batter doesn’t get his bat on the ball, he is most certainly out at the plate.
All elements of this were high risk and high reward. The manager (CEO) also had timing in his favor. If the play doesn’t work out, the worst that happens is they move to the next inning. In other words, the failure isn’t fatal.
Startups make those same decisions. Okay to take a risk if failure isn’t fatal and you are able to end it when you see it isn’t working out.
