Try Some Raw Milk, Eat Some Leaf Lard

I was away for the last eight days deep in the woods of northern Minnesota. I had very limited access to cell technology, and limited access to the internet. My grandfather built a place in the woods there and my wife and I opened it up. I posted some photos on Instagram and Facebook.

While tooling around, I came upon a farm. They had some cows, and chickens. They gave me some fresh raw milk to try. Wow! If you haven’t had it you need to try it. It tastes like the pasture. Full of flavor.

I have written about milk and government regulation in the past. I think a lot of this regulation is way overdone, but I am not against factory farming. I just think that products should be labeled honestly and clearly, and let people choose.

The market will determine winners and losers.

A lot of people hate the raw milk story-and say that you can get disease from it. From the research I have done, the risk of disease is very low. If you buy from a reputable farmer, there probably isn’t any risk. Interestingly, with the internet and social media, it would be easy to peg a bad farmer and they would go out of business.

The real thing that all this regulation kills is jobs. All over the United States, small towns are dying. Imagine if they could start a small boutique industry making raw milk cheese and other raw milk products. Jobs would be created overnight as little companies started up.

Additionally, the US palate would get exposed to all the great raw milk cheeses that Europeans have been eating without problems for centuries.

Personally, I have suffered from eczema ever since I graduated from college. Supposedly, raw milk can help with that condition because of all the microrganisms that are in it. They are killed off in all the milk you buy at the store. I will have to find a connection in Chicago so I can experiment. The stuff is harder to find than heroin, and probably has a bigger mark up too.

As I research food, I am finding things that used to be considered bad for you, like leaf lard, are actually good. And the stuff that has always been supposedly good for you isn’t good at all. Kind of turns modern agriculture on its head. Just like fresh water economics.

If you get the chance on your summer travels, see if you can find a small dairy and get a glass of milk.
