Blumenthal a Schmuck

Democratic Connecticut Senate candidate Richard Blumenthal lied about his service in Vietnam. He is going to press forward with his campaign. I wonder why? How can voters trust anything he says when he lies about his service? He ought to quit.
A few years ago, I was at a Medal of Honor gathering in Green Bay, Wisconsin. At one of their events, a “vet” turned up sporting a lot of medals, including the Medal of Honor! One of the MOH guys noticed that the medals he was wearing were fake. He tried to pass himself off as a war hero, when in fact he was a schmuck. Blumenthal is no different.
Blumenthal received military deferments from 1965-1970. He supposedly was in the Marines in 1970. But he never served under fire in Vietnam.
Many times when you are in military service, you don’t control where you go. You are at the whim of a commander, who is at the mercy of their chain of command. If you see battle, you see battle. But, wars are not only won on the front line. Support troops are critical to the mission, and it’s no crime to be behind the lines supporting the people getting the brunt of the attack. Patton famously said that “an army moves on its stomach.”. He understood logistics and used them to his advantage. Soldiers tell me you have no control over the battle, and no control over where you go. Following orders is one of the first things you learn in basic training.
Blumenthal may have served in the Marines and done a good job. Why didn’t he just say that? Most of the people that I have met in my life that actually found themselves under live fire don’t talk about it much. They are just regular citizens like you and I.
On another note, another Congressman is resigning. Had an affair with a staffer. While no one could condone the behavior, at least he came clean and stepped down. More honorable than the Senate candidate from Connecticut. Hope the Connecticut voters thrash him.
